The most current chapter of One Piece chapter 886 has shown us that Luffy is not ready to take down Charlotte Katakuri. Charlotte Katakuri is one of the four Sweet Commanders under the Emperor Big Mom. Katakuri is also the strongest of the sweet commanders which is even worse for Luffy. Luffy was able to beat Commander Cracker after a fight that lasted about 11 hours, however Luffy was only able to beat Cracker because he had the help of Nami, who has abilities that weaken Crackers armor. Also Luffy showed us a new form in Gear 4th which was tank man ( defensive form), he also has bound man form. Cracker was defeated also because he has a huge weakness which is not being able to take hits, that is why he would use his biscuit biscuit fruit to make armor all around his body, but if he is hit once really hard without armor he is done for. Against Katakuri it’s a completely different story, Luffy could only keep up if he is in Gear 4th and that is bad because as we know, Luffy could only be in Gear 4th for 10 minutes. Luffy’s previous forms are no match for Katakuri at all, he took very heavy damage earlier in the fight because he knows that he could only use Gear 4th in emergencies.
Katakuri has the mochi mochi fruit, and his abilities are very similar to Luffy’s, except that they are on a whole other level. But the thing about Katakuri that makes him unbeatable Is that his observation haki is on a whole new level, he can see a bit into the future with it, which makes him anticipate every single one of Luffy’s moves. Katakuri does have 1 single weakness though and he stated it himself in the most recent chapter, and that weakness is that observation haki is only effective when the user is calm. And we were shown this in the scene where Katakuri thought he killed Luffy and then he went to take a break to eat, nobody has ever seen Katakuri eat because Katakuri doesn’t want anybody to see his teeth that is why he covers it.
Luffy then comes out of nowhere and surprises Katakuri and since Katakuri let his guard down and lost his calm after somebody finally saw him eat, Luffy was able to land a heavy Gear 4th punch on Katakuri. Shortly after this though Katakuri decided to always keep his guard up and so Luffy had to escape because his time was about to run out anyways. If the only way to beat Katakuri is to make him lose his calm, then Luffy is going to have to make his own observation haki level better. On One Piece discussion video comments everybody says that Luffy is just going to get a new form to take out Katakuri, but I believe that is wrong. If Oda ( author) decides to go that route then it's just going to feel like a cop out.
I truly believe that Luffy has the ability to see a bit into the future as well, Oda has been hinting this for years now. During the War of Marineford Luffy was able to see a bit into the future, nobody seems to talk about this maybe because it was so many years ago. In the scene when Luffy was about to fight Dracule Mihawk ( world's best swordsman and one of the seven warlords) , Luffy was about to attack Mihawk when he got a vision of the future, and that future showed that if Luffy did the move he was about to make, Mihawk was going to cut his arms off. Luffy then stopped and he decided to retreat. People think nothing of this, but this is One Piece, anything shown at all whether it is minor or not is a big deal and it is going to be very important later. And also Luffy awakened conquerors haki at marineford, who's to say he didn’t awaken the ability to see a bit into the future as well? He showed it, and since he has it all he has to do is learn how to use it. Luffy even hints at this at the end of the most recent chapter, if Luffy can use observation haki to see a bit into the future, he can give Katakuri a challenge and break his calm. The winner of the fight will be decided on one factor, and that factor is who can stay calm the most during the fight. That is how Luffy can defeat Charlotte Katakuri.
