Call of Duty is one of the biggest franchises in the history of gaming. And it also took over the youtube gaming scene in the earlier days of the franchise. The Call of Duty franchise changed the first person shooter genre with Call of Duty 4 Modern Warfare. Each year the game would keep getting better like for example with Call of Duty World at War which introduced the very popular zombie horde mode. The game that started the Call of duty gaming revolution on youtube was Modern Warfare 2, all of these youtubers would post clips of awesome gameplays and Call of Duty became the most watched game on youtube.

With releases coming every year and millions of people buying copies of the new game for their console or PC every year, what could go wrong for gaming’s biggest franchise? A combination of greedy business practices by Activision and a lack of innovation have sprung the Call of Duty Franchise towards a downwards spiral. Even though there are 3 companies that develop the games ( one gets  a turn each year) the games do not feel different at all. The fall of Call of Duty began after Black ops II with the release of Call of Duty Ghosts. Most of the fanbase really disliked the game because they had very high expectations of the franchise especially because of the greatness of earlier titles. It was a stale year for Call of Duty. Then advanced warfare came and it innovated by changing the movement system. The community was happy for a few months but they began to get tired of the movement system since it was too futuristic. And with AW also came the introduction of supply drops. Which are a way of using real money to get better variants of guns by gambling, and Call of Duty then began to have a problem with pay to win. With the release of Black ops 3 people expected the franchise to head into the right direction but once again they were disappointed because the futuristic setting and movement was back along with the supply drops. Supply drops were even worse in BO3 as guns were locked behind a paywall and it was almost impossible to get a gun out of a supply drop unless you spent money. The number of guns in supply drops outnumbered the number of guns the game came with, the only thing that saved the game from being a failure was the zombies mode which was very enjoyable. The youtube scene for multiplayer was quickly dying at this rate since people were tired of the lack of innovation and the greedy business practices of Activision, however for zombies the youtube community was satisfied.

After BO3 came Infinite Warfare from IW and this is when the series stuck one foot into the grave. IW brought back supply drops and gun variants along with the futuristic setting and movement. When the trailer dropped for IW on youtube it got around 3 million dislikes making it one of the most disliked videos on youtube ever. Activision had to release modern warfare remastered along with IW in order for the game to sell, and it did sell a lot still but the player count was very low on IW. The youtube scene for Call of Duty was basically dead and other games like player unknown battlegrounds took over youtube. It was a horrible year for Call of Duty, but with the announcement of COD WW2 the community was hopeful again.

Even with the release of WW2 the COD franchise still hasn't gained back its spot for most watched game on youtube, and even though some people came back to the franchise. The franchise still is not back to its former glory. Games like Player unknown battlegrounds and Fortnite have taken over gamers and youtubers. The first person shooter genre is losing popularity and the battle royale genre is gaining popularity fast. Pubg ( player unknown battlegrounds) is already the most bought and played game on PC. If Call of Duty does not innovate their series fast, and if they stop with their greedy business practices they could stop the franchise from dying but at the current state it's going to die during this year when everyone gets tired of WW2.
